OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!

Here is a list of some important facts to know:

1) Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women.

The second leading cause of death among women Fortunately, breast cancer deaths have been decreasing as detection & treatment improve, reducing the mortality rate to 3 in 100.

2) Early detection and treatment are keys to breast cancer survival.

If cancer hasn’t strayed outside the breast, the 5-year survival rate is close to 100%. Early detection through regular examinations is crucial.

Women should begin doing monthly self-exams at age 20.  By age 40, women should have annual mammograms & breast exams by a doctor.

3) Mammography is the most reliable way to detect breast cancer.

Although this is true, detection & successful treatment rates go up if the patient combined self-exams with yearly mammograms.

DON’T SKIP THESE APPOINTMENTS!

4) You can check for possible signs in breast cancer.

Know your body, listen to it & seek a physician’s advice if something is worry-some.  Don’t ignore the signs!

5) Many factors are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
-A family history of breast cancer is considered a principal risk factor. Yet 80%-90% of women who get the disease have no known family history.

One of the most important factors is aging. The older you get, the greater the risk. At age 20 your risk is just 1 in 1,985. But at age 70, your risk skyrockets to 1 in 24.

The United States has the highest rates of breast cancer in the world.  Early detection & treatment are so incredibly important!

Attention male members:

Encourage the women in your lives to stay up-to-date on their screenings.  This holds true for yourselves as well; stay current on your prostate cancer screenings with your doctor.

No one wants to lose a loved one to cancer!

Spinach Tofu
Stir-fry
This recipe utilizes some of the food Jen discusses that are believed to be beneficial to breast health.

Tofu, firm, cubed, ~ 1cup
Spinach, fresh, 1 bunch
Snow Peas, ¼ cup
Snap peas, ¼ cup
Soy Sauce 1tbsp
Red pepper flakes, 1 tbsp
Garlic, 1 bulb, chopped
Rice Wine, a splash
Sesame oil, 1 tbsp
Bell Peppers, 1 cup, strips
hoisin sauce, 1 tbsp

Directions

Combine the rice wine, garlic, pepper flakes, soy sauce, sesame oil, & hoisin sauce.

In a wok (or large saucepan) toss the tofu in the marinade over medium-to-high heat.

Gently stir around the tofu adding vegetables as you go (spinach cooks quickly, so add last)
Continue tossing around until the spinach is just wilted

Take off flame and serve over steamed rice.
Serves 4.

Stir-fry dishes are incredibly versatile.  Don’t like snow peas or spinach?  Throw in your favorite vegetables—Broccoli, carrots, kale or for a touch of sweetness, think about adding pineapple.  Same goes for the rice, you can choose white rice or brown rice or try it with various Asian style noodles.  It’s your dish, make it what you want!

Hello Members!
Can you believe it’s fall already? Where did summer go? It’s time to settle in &  develop  those healthy habits to get us all through the holiday season. The change  of seasons is the perfect time to renew,  rethink & restart.

Look around & see what intrigues you.  Give it a try. Keep in mind that it takes  the body about four weeks to adapt to  lifestyle changes.

Whatever intrigues you, try it for at least  30 days. After a month, behavior  patterns will have adapted & it will be  much easier to stick with. Try a new class, workout with a trainer, step onto  that machine that you have been eyeing  or take the challenge to increase the  weights you are lifting.

Renew, Rethink & Restart!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness  Month. Core Fitness will be offering  Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirts for  $10. Proceeds from the sale of these t-shirts will be donated to a local cancer  victim to help offset their expenses.

Personal Training

Beth Tennison

I am pleased to introduce you all to our  new personal trainer, Kristy Loomis!  Kristy would like to say a few words to  meet all of our members:

Hi!
I am certified as a personal trainer  through the National  Academy of Sports  Medicine & have an AAS Degree from Alexandria Technical College. I have been training for close to a year & a half.

I have trained clients with various goals  such as weight loss, muscle building, marathoners, tri-athletes, postphysical therapy, & firefighters. I decided to  become a trainer after I was a nursing  aid for 4 years. I also attended nursing school for a 24 credit semester & it was not for me, I was sick of realizing that for  the majority of my nursing career I would have to be around unhappy people   sick people. I wanted to help  people & after helping my roommate lose  20 pounds, I  decided my passion  was aimed toward fitness.
When I moved back to Iowa 3 months  ago, I was excited to join the Core  Fitness Team! I hope I can bring great results to you guys & help you love yourselves more by reaching your fitness goals!
